Aston Villa couldn’t get a deal done for Julian Alvarez over the summer and may now see the River Plate star end up at Manchester United instead.
Aston Villa’s pursuit of Alvarez
Over the summer, Villa were very keen on signing Alvarez.
Back in July, TNT Sports reported that Alvarez’s agent was off to England to try and thrash out a deal.
Villa were willing to pay €10million (£8.5million) to sign Alvarez, but they just couldn’t get the deal over the line.
That fee was some way short of Alvarez’s £17million release clause, which rises to £21million in the final 10 days of the January window.
Alvarez has done nothing but excel since those Villa rumours.
In his last 21 games for River, Alvarez has smashed 18 goals. With seven assists in that time too, Alvarez has become Argentinian football’s next big thing.
The 21-year-old could finally leave River in January, but don’t expect him to be turning out for Villa.
Manchester United join Alvarez race
Ole now claim that Manchester United have recently made a call to try and sign Alvarez.
The Red Devils are now right in the mix for Alvarez, challenging Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan Bayer Leverkusen, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.
After being compared to Cristiano Ronaldo, Alvarez could join CR7 at Manchester United.
It now seems that Alvarez will be going to a major European club rather than Aston Villa.
Every club has their regrets in the transfer market, but this one could end up being a big regret for Villa.
Alvarez looks set for a huge career, and Villa not managing to get that deal over the line may come back to haunt them.
