Aston Villa coach John Terry has given a speech to England’s rugby union team ahead of their crucial Six Nations clash against Wales in Cardiff this Saturday.
The 38-year-old captained England’s football team during his career and won 78 caps for the Three Lions, while at club level his leadership skills contributed to a glorious period in Chelsea’s history.
Terry’s medal collection consists of five Premier League titles, a Champions League, an Europa League, four FA Cups, three League Cups and four Community Shields (Transfermarkt).
Therefore, as winners go, there are few more accomplished than him in recent history, making him a great candidate to discuss winning tactics to a team hoping to claim their hands on 6N silverware just months before the World Cup in Japan.
As BBC Sport reports, Terry spent Tuesday morning at the nation’s Bagshot training base, exchanging ideas on issues such as leadership and motivation with both players and coaches.
“The players were really engaged by talking to him,” said forwards coach Steve Borthwick. “He gave some great messages.
“He spoke about the traits in the highly successful teams he has been a part of, which are consistent with the type of thing we talk about: the competitiveness, the drive in training, players taking responsibility. Those are the themes we discussed and that is what we want to drive here.”
Villa are next in action on Saturday with a Championship trip to Stoke City as they seek to make a late tilt for the playoffs, currently sitting nine points behind sixth-placed Bristol City.
