Aston Villa want Jan Bednarek but Southampton are seeking a fee in excess of £15million should they sell the defender this summer.
Villa splashed the cash on signing Sevilla defender Diego Carlos this summer, but he has already suffered a major injury.
Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa started at centre back on Saturday, but a 3-1 defeat at Crystal Palace won’t exactly inspire hope.
Manager Steven Gerrard is starting to feel the pressure and may well want another new centre back to bolster his back line.
Aston Villa want Jan Bednarek
One potential option appears to be Bednarek, with reports from The Athletic claiming that Villa have already made an approach for the defender.
Meczyki in Bednarek’s native Poland add that Villa are indeed interested and he could team up with international teammate Matty Cash at Villa Park.
The Daily Echo have an update, suggesting that the deal is at such an early stage that it’s too soon to tell whether Villa will secure Bednarek.
It’s stated that Southampton want north of £15million if they are to sell Bednarek, seemingly ruling out a loan move.
Whether Villa will commit to paying considerable money for another defender remains to be seen, but Southampton are standing firm.
Southampton paid £5million to sign Bednarek from Lech Poznan back in 2017 and now want more than £10million in profit before any sell-on clauses.
Bednarek has turned out more than 150 times for Southampton, making himself something of a bargain for the Saints.
The 26-year-old has been hailed as ‘heroic’ by Alan Shearer in the past and Villa may well see similar qualities in Bednarek.
Southampton understandably don’t want to sell easily, so Villa will have to dig deep and come up with a pretty good offer for the Polish ace.
