Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal wanted Aarons back in 2014 – three years on he’s being linked with a move to Championship side Aston Villa.
Sometimes life really isn’t fair. Three years ago, Rolando Aarons was emerging as one of the brightest talents in English football, making his mark in Newcastle United’s first team and being linked with a move to one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.
These days, however, injuries have transformed him from the club’s great hope into their forgotten man. And Aarons is now being tipped to drop down to the Championship in order to get his stuttering career back on track.
According to The Mirror (15.06pm Live Blog), Aston Villa are battling Crystal Palace and Huddersfield Town to land the 22-year-old winger, the trio hoping that he will be made available on a cut-price deal.
And while Villa appear to be going places right now, sitting fourth in the Championship and in an excellent position to fight for promotion, the expectation was that Aarons would be starring at the top of the English game by now – not about to drop into the second tier.
According to The Express in December 2014, the skilful winger had attracted interest from Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool after making a superb start to his Newcastle career.
Aarons scored and starred in a 2-0 EFL Cup win away at City two months prior, drawing comparisons with one Raheem Sterling.
But after a cruel and relentless array of injuries, which have limited Aarons to four league starts in the last two seasons, he could ironically be fighting for a place with another of English football’s forgotten talents – one Jack Grealish.
