The midfielder somehow managed to come out on top despite his side’s 6-0 defeat.
Aston Villa’s defeat to Liverpool on Sunday was not a game their defensive players will look back upon fondly.
The 6-0 defeat, which saw six separate Reds players, including Kolo Toure, manage to get on the score sheet, was easily their worst display of the season.
It was a defensive horror show all across the pitch though, with the Villa midfield also failing to do their duty in helping to protect a fragile defence.
One player who had a better day that expected though, is midfielder Idrissa Gueye who managed to come out better than any other player in the Premier League in one key defensive area despite his side’s struggles.
| Team | Match | Interception Won | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Idrissa Gueye | Aston Villa | Aston Villa vs Liverpool | 10 | 90 |
| Federico Fernández | Swansea | Swansea vs Southampton | 8 | 90 |
| Wes Morgan | Leicester | Arsenal vs Leicester | 8 | 90 |
As the table provided by Opta shows, he managed to win the most interceptions of any player across last weekend’s fixtures.
Gueye won 10 interceptions in the loss to Liverpool, just ahead of Swansea City’s Federico Fernandez and Leicester City defender Wes Morgan who both managed eight.
An impressive tally for Gueye then, who despite his side’s overall flimsy defensive showing still managed to dominate in this key area.
Villa fans will be hoping he can post similarly striking stats in the coming weeks as they look to mount an unlikely escape from relegation in the final games of the campaign.
