Villa have been caught short at both right-back and centre-back, and they are both positions that Holgate is comfortable in.
The Everton loanee could also have slotted in well with Dean Smith’s style, as he has all the qualities required to thrive.
Villa have looked to press high and keep possession since Smith took charge, and Holgate’s skill-set looks suited to these tactics.
However, Villa look like they will have to watch their local rivals complete the signing which would have been ideal for them.
And West Brom will be hoping that Holgate’s arrival can give them an advantage in the race for promotion.
