Aston Villa have always been an interesting club to follow.

Love them or hate them, you have to admit that there’s very rarely a dull season at Villa Park.

Whether it’s winning a European Cup, challenging for Europe under Martin O’Neill, reaching an FA Cup final under Tim Sherwood or making strides under Steven Gerrard, Villa are always worth keeping an eye on.

However, in recent times, they’ve become one of the most exciting teams in England to follow for another reason, their transfer strategy.

Villa have been one of the most active teams in the transfer window over the past few years. That’s continued this month as they’ve signed three players already.

However, the manner of some of their signings is what’s made them more exciting.

We live in the age of constant information and 24/7 coverage from journalists up and down the country, but somehow, Aston Villa have grasped the art of keeping a signing completely under wraps.

Calum Chambers was signed this week without a single report, rumour or whisper emerging beforehand. He was simply announced as an Aston Villa player, and that was that.

Nobody close to the player, Arsenal or Aston Villa leaked any information beforehand and the signing took us all by surprise.

This type of transfer is so rare these days, but this isn’t the first time Villa have managed to do such a thing.

Danny Ings was signed under similar circumstances in the summer. Just think about that, a £30m transfer for an England international came from out of nowhere.

Chambers’ signing is the second time in six months that Villa have managed to bring someone in without anyone having a clue about it happening, and thdy aren’t doing this by accident.

Indeed Ings has gone on the record about how Villa wanted the signing to take everyone by surprise – he didn’t even tell his family about the transfer until it was complete, and that makes Villa one of the most interesting teams to follow, especially during a transfer window.

Villa fans can never be quite sure what’s coming next from their club. They’ve now shown on two occasions that they can pull transfers out of thin air, and it must be incredibly exciting to never quite be sure what’s waiting around the corner.

Whether or not Chambers turns out to be a success at Villa Park remains to be seen, but Villa have proven that their surprise signing of Ings wasn’t a one-off.

Steven Gerrard’s side have shown that they can pull off this sort of surprise signing at any moment, and that has just made them an even more exciting club to follow.
