The Villans were forced to settle for a draw after the away side bagged a late equaliser.
Aston Villa’s Rudy Gestede
Rudy Gestede has told the Birmingham Mail that Aston Villa played well during their game with Nottingham Forest on Sunday, and insisted that the visitors were fortunate to leave Villa Park with a share of the points.
After a goalless first-half, Apostolos Vellios gave Philippe Montanier’s men the lead shortly before the hour-mark. However, the Villans turned the game on its head within three minutes of the equaliser as Gestede – who came on as a second-half substitute – put Villa in front after Ross McCormack had levelled the contest.
Ross McCormack had equalised after Villa had gone behind
But Roberto Di Matteo was denied his second win as manager as Henri Lansbury equalised with just minutes to go to leave the home side languishing in the bottom-half of the Championship.
And Gestede believes that Villa deserved to hold on to the victory after putting in a solid display against Forest.
Nottingham Forest’s Henri Lansbury scored the late equaliser
“To be fair though, we did well. We won everything in the game, on the pitch,” he told the Mail.
“Forest are very lucky I think to go back with a point.”
Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo
While Di Matteo may be happy with his side’s performance, one area which will concern him enormously is the number of late goals that his side have conceded this term.
Lansbury’s leveller was the fourth that Villa have let in in the final 10 minutes in just six league games this term. And if they do not find a way to keep the goals out in the dying minutes, it is difficult to imagine that they will be challenging for promotion come the end of the season.
