Sir Alex Ferguson once told the Manchester Evening News that he felt Nick Powell could fill Paul Scholes’ boots, and should excite Aston Villa fans after the latest transfer rumours.

The Birmingham Mail have suggested that Villa have had an offer for Powell rebuffed, but they remain interested in the Wigan Athletic midfielder.

Powell has not fulfilled his promise since moving to United as a youngster, but Ferguson’s words about the Wigan man should serve as encouragement to Villa supporters.

“We hope Powell fills Paul Scholes’ boots. For an 18-year-old boy it has been a terrific day,” Ferguson said, back in 2006.

Powell never developed into the prospect United were hoping for during his time at Old Trafford.

However, he is proving to be one of the standout players at League One level this season.

Powell has scored prolifically for Wigan, and is one of the reasons why the Latics are sitting at the top of the division.

If Powell was to move to Villa, he would face fierce competition for a first-team place.

But if he even develops into half the player Ferguson thought he may become, then he will prove an excellent signing for Villa.
