It seems Aston Villa fans would rather bring back a familiar face from Everton than sign the Stoke City player.

Aston Villa have climbed back to the front of the queue of clubs trying to sign Glenn Whelan, according to The Irish Sun.

The tabloid claims Villa reopened talks with Whelan’s employers Stoke City yesterday [Monday] and are trying to conclude a deal this week, after an earlier move stalled.

But despite having 81 international caps and being a regular in the Premier League last season, the 33-year-old it seems is not every Villan’s cup of tea.

And many have urged the club’s owner Tony Xia to consider another top flight midfielder instead, amid speculation that Burnley and West Bromwich Albion are trying to sign him from Everton [Mail].

In the meantime, odds on Barry’s transfer to Villa Park have dropped significantly this afternoon.

Bookmaker Sky Bet had Aston Villa at 10/1 to re-sign the 36-year-old this morning, but are now as short as 7/2, behind only West Brom [1/1].
