Villans CEO Christian Purslow confirmed the club will not be having a parade to celebrate their return to the Premier League.
Aston Villa chief executive Christian Purslow has confirmed that the Premier League bound club will not be holding a parade for triumphing in the Championship playoff final.
The Villans put three years of hurt behind them by running out 2-1 winners over Derby County at Wembley Stadium on Monday afternoon and earn promotion to the top flight once again.
Dean Smith’s charges, beaten by Fulham in last season’s final, went two up with 30 minutes to go against the Rams thanks to goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn.
Although Frank Lampard’s side threw caution to the wind in the latter stages and halved the deficit through Martyn Waghorn, Villa held firm to put an end to their Championship tenure.
Nevertheless, Purslow said he spoke with Smith regarding the prospect of having a public celebration in case of promotion and they decided not to plan one, explaining his reasons for doing so.
“Dean and I talked about it for under 10 seconds about a week ago and we both had an identical reaction,” he told the official Villa media channel.
“We’re Aston Villa. We have parades when we win cups and leagues, not when we get promoted effectively third. We had a wonderful day and wonderful celebrations but parades are for when we win something big.”
Purslow’s admission prompted a mixed reaction on Twitter from the Villa fanbase, with some praising his decision as a sign of a big-club mentality and others criticising it for depriving supporters of a joyous public celebration in the city:
