The Villa full-back impressed for Dean Smith’s side in their Premier League rout today.

A number of Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to rejoice in their 5-1 Premier League hammering of Norwich and, whilst every player who featured for Dean Smith’s side played well, plenty were especially pleased for how Matt Targett did today.

Smith confirmed at his pre-match press conference on Thursday that the 24-year-old, who had suffered a hamstring problem in the draw with Burnley, had returned to training and would be available for selection for Saturday’s showdown between the newly-promoted sides.

Targett swapped Southampton for Villa this summer but he has had a fairly stop-start beginning to his time at B6 due to injury, so his name on today’s teamsheet was welcomed by many claret and blue fans, who had expressed doubts over Neil Taylor at left-back in the top flight.

It was all the sweeter as the ex-Saint slotted in seamlessly in the back line and put in a performance on the same high level as his other teammates, working well with Conor Hourihane inside and Jack Grealish ahead, and providing a great outlet on the left flank.

Here is what some Villa fans said on social media regarding Targett’s performance being on target today:

Targett ended a 15-year stay at Southampton, having come through their academy and made 43 Premier League appearances for the club, to join Villa for a reported initial £11.5million fee (Express & Star) and is reported to be on a £35,000-per-week deal (Spotrac).
