Some Aston Villa fans have expressed confusion and dismay after the EFL announced its candidates for March’s Championship Player of the Month.

Four players are in the running – Leeds United’s Pablo Hernandez, Rotherham United’s Semi Ajayi, Sheffield United’s Jack O’Connell and Norwich City’s Emiliano Buendia.

Despite Villa having won all five of their Championship games in March, scoring 13 goals and conceding just two, none of their players were nominated for the monthly accolade.

A number of claret and blue fans took to Twitter with their alternative nominations, with Jack Grealish and John McGinn featuring prominently:

McGinn scored three goals and registered two assists for Dean Smith’s side in March, although he was suspended for the win over Derby County, as Transfermarkt points out.

As for Grealish, he scored twice and claimed one assist last month (Transfermarkt), his return to the side against the Rams arguably one of the main catalysts for Villa’s resurgence over the past six weeks.

While no Villa players have been nominated for March, boss Smith is in the running for the Manager of the Month award, up against Norwich’s Daniel Farke, Reading’s Jose Gomes and West Bromwich Albion’s James Shan.
