After three years outside the Premier League, Aston Villa are back into the big time following a superb late-season run in the Championship which culminated in a top-six finish and a subsequent triumph in the playoffs.

Few had given the Villans much hope of making the top six as late on as February, their 1-1 draw with Stoke City on 23 February putting them 11th in the table, eight points adrift of the playoffs and having played at least one game more than three of the teams in those positions (BBC Sport).

Dean Smith’s side then embarked on a superb winning run which elevated them into the playoff spots and, in the semi-finals, they saw off West Bromwich Albion to book a Wembley Stadium date against Derby County, who they also defeated to triumphantly return to the league they slipped out of in 2016.

On Thursday, Villa’s official Twitter channel announced that the fixtures for the upcoming Premier League season will be released at 9am on Thursday 13 June and asked fans which team they would like on the opening day of the season.

A sizeable majority of the claret and blue faithful had one team in mind:

Villa’s record against fellow West Midlands side Wolverhampton Wanderers stands at 54 wins, 32 draws and 39 defeats, while their last five fixtures have resulted in two wins, two losses and a draw, according to 11v11.
