The Villa Park cult hero was sensational in claret and blue but has failed to reach the same heights since.

A number of Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on Villa Park cult hero Christian Benteke signing a new contract at Crystal Palace – much to the chagrin of many Eagles supporters.

The Belgium striker got his first taste of English football at Villa when he joined from Genk on 31 August 2012 and it did not take long for him to make his mark in the claret and blue, scoring on his debut against Swansea after coming on as a substitute.

So impressive was Benteke for Villa that, when he joined Liverpool in 2015, he was their second most expensive signing, at £32.5million – his Villans release clause – on what the Reds describe as a “long-term contract”, BBC Sport reported at the time.

Unfortunately, the 28-year-old could never quite match his heroics at Villa – 49 goals and 12 assists in 101 claret and blue appearances according to Transfermarkt – at Anfield and he eventually upped sticks to Crystal Palace the following summer, where he currently boasts a tally of 21 goals and nine assists from 98 appearances.

Here is some of the social media reaction from the Villa faithful to Benteke’s new deal at Selhurst Park:
