The 31-year-old impressed as Dean Smith’s Championship high-flyers ran out 2-1 winners over Blackburn at Villa Park.
Aston Villa recorded their fifth Championship win in a row and climbed up to fifth in the table after beating Blackburn Rovers 2-1 in Saturday’s league encounter at Villa Park.
The hosts were bright from the start and drew first blood just eight minutes as John McGinn’s neat ball found Anwar El Ghazi, who in turn set up Tammy Abraham to tap in his 22nd of the season.
Villa then made it two just after the hour thanks to the impressive Tyrone Mings, McGinn heavily involved once again as his curling cross was headed home by the on-loan Bournemouth defender, his second goal at the Holte End.
Although Blackburn ensured a nervy finish thanks to a goal from Amari’i Bell, who rifled home on the rebound from a Jed Steer save in the 74th minute, Dean Smith’s side saw out the game in front of an ecstatic home crowd.
Virtually every Villa player put in a great shift, with Ahmed Elmohamady rated 7.5 by the Birmingham Mail and deemed “steady and reliable down the right as he largely stuck to his defensive duties, rarely puts a foot wrong these days”.
