Aston Villa have the advantage in their Championship playoff semi-final as they came from behind to run out 2-1 winners over West Bromwich Albion in Saturday’s early kickoff at Villa Park.

The hosts got off to a bad start, falling behind in the 16th minute when Glenn Whelan failed to control a pass, which allowed Dwight Gayle to claim the ball, run at goal and plant the ball home past Jed Steer.

To their credit, the Villans came back strongly and dominated much of the game, eventually equalising when substitute Conor Hourihane hammered an effort home from the edge of the area.

Jack Grealish was then tripped over in the box by Kieran Gibbs, allowing Tammy Abraham to slot in the winner from the penalty spot to give Dean Smith’s side the advantage going to The Hawthorns on Tuesday night.

Despite the impressive comeback by Villa against the ten men of Albion – Gayle was shown a second yellow card – winger Albert Adomah was deemed to have had a poor day at the office and some Villa fans made their feelings known on Twitter:

Adomah, who joined Villa from Middlesbrough in 2016 for a £3.2million fee (Transfermarkt), has made 37 Championship appearances this season including Saturday, scoring four goals and registering three assists.
