A report claimed Aston Villa were closing in on Axel Tuanzebe.

New signing Axel Tuanzebe of Aston Villa poses for a picture at the club's training ground at Bodymoor Heath on August 06, 2018 in Birmingham, England.

A report in The Sun this week claimed Aston Villa were close to striking an agreement with Manchester United to extend Axel Tuanzebe’s loan into next season.

The report speculated a deal is likely whether Villa win promotion to the Premier League or not.

Well it’s time to pump the brakes on this rumour for the time being.

Firstly, it’s March. No transfer deals for the 2019/20 season will be agreed now.

Tuanzebe has a bright future, and Manchester United will not want to rush into a decision.

United are still to formally announce their next manager, even though it is expected to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. This could still depend on how the Red Devils end the season, having lost their last two matches before the international break.

The Red Devils are also hoping to appoint a director of football, The Mail has reported.

This will have a significant bearing on Tuanzebe’s future.

There is a queue of centre-backs at United, but there will be departures, and incomings.

His future will depend on how United’s business pans out.

It also makes sense for the next manager, Solskjaer or otherwise, to assess Tuanzebe in pre-season along with his peers.

Only then, might United make up their minds one way or another.

United should be in no rush. Villa should not get carried away about Tuanzebe’s return at this time.
