The Villa legend admitted Dean Smith’s side were outplayed at Griffin Park but remained optimistic in the long term.
Aston Villa legend Ian Taylor has admitted that his side were outplayed on Wednesday night as they fell to a 1-0 Championship loss at Brentford and his subsequent call for patience received some criticism on Twitter.
Neal Maupay, who impressed for the Bees in the reverse Championship fixture at Villa Park with both his side’s goals in August’s 2-2 draw, once again proved a thorn in the West Midlanders’ side.
As well as the on-pitch action, stats showed Villa were second best at Griffin Park, with only six shots – three on target – and 37.6 per cent possession compared to Brentford’s 23 shots – six on target – and 62.4 per cent possession (Sky Sports).
However, Dean Smith’s side continued to hang on well into the latter stages of the game but eventually his old club broke their resistance as Maupay cut inside Tyrone Mings and rifled home in stoppage time to break Villa hearts.
Villa sit 10th in the table and have now won just twice in their last 12 games, but despite Taylor’s disappointment in his Twitter message about the game, he called for patience:
