Aston Villa did not get off to the best start in their bid to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Roberto Di Matteo’s side are among the favourites to succeed in the Championship this season but it was Sheffield Wednesday that ran out 1-0 winners on Sunday, courtesy of a late goal from Fernando Forestieri.
Villa looked good for at least a point and did not play badly, but this is a division where anyone can beat anyone else and Di Matteo is all too aware of the challenges ahead.
The Villans had some new signings on show, including striker Ross McCormack and defender Tommy Elphick, and the latter was particularly impressive throughout the encounter.
Signed from Bournemouth earlier this summer, Elphick looked exactly the kind of defender Villa will need if they want to make their stay in the second tier as short as possible.
