Aston Villa fans have been reacting on Twitter after Steve Bruce suggested, in comments reported by the Express and Star, that Alan Hutton would be getting a new contract at Villa Park if the decision was solely down to him.

Hutton is out of contract in the summer. And while he has never quite managed to win over all of the Villans fans, he has undoubtedly enjoyed a fantastic run of form to end the season and was superb in the first-leg of their play-off semi-final with Middlesbrough, playing a key role in keeping the potentially dangerous Adama Traore quiet throughout the contest.

And Bruce has acknowledged the 33-year-old’s form by insisting that if the decision on his future was his and his alone, Hutton would be sticking around – and he will try to convince the club hierarchy to hand Hutton the fresh terms that he feels the Scotsman deserves.

“He’s been terrific since I’ve been here,” he said, as reported by the Express and Star.

“If I get my way there will certainly be a contract offered to him.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Bruce’s comments have been met by a mixed response amongst the Villa faithful. Some are in agreement with the manager that Hutton has earned a new deal with his recent form – even if he does not prove to be a first choice next season.

Others however, are adamant that it is madness to talk about handing the defender a new contract. There have been occasions when the former Rangers ace has not been good enough, and with the full-back well into the twilight of his career, several supporters are suggesting that a new deal makes no sense.

Hutton can undoubtedly help his cause by helping Villa capitalise on their 1-0 lead from the first-leg with Boro and secure a spot in the play-off final.
