On paper, Aston Villa have one of the strongest squads in the Championship. And the prospect of adding Robert Snodgrass to the likes of John Terry, Conor Hourihane, Jonathan Kodjia and Mile Jedinak should have second tier opponents running for the hills.

As we all know, however, football isn’t played on paper. And the fact that Villa are currently sitting 16th, with just one win from their first four Championship fixtures, proves that emphatically.

And, with a number of big-name signings struggling to find their feet at Villa from Ross McCormack to Henri Lansbury, you can understand why supporters may be a little concerned at the prospect of Snodgrass arriving in the Midlands.

The Mail report that Villa are now the frontrunners to land the 30-year-old Scotland winger, who has endured a rather mixed 12 months. Superb in the first half of last season with Hull City, Snodgrass’ form dipped dramatically when joining West Ham for £10 million in January – so much so that they have made him available for transfer.

However, a loan deal at Villa Park, and a reunion with former Hull boss Steve Bruce, now looks most likely with Sunderland struggling to stump up the cash required to take him to the Stadium of Light.

There’s little doubt that Snodgrass, who thrived in the second tier with Leeds, will be a brilliant signing if he finds his form. Though that is a rather big ‘if’ and some supporters are far from convinced.
