Stoke City stopper Jack Butland is said to be wanted by Aston Villa boss Dean Smith.

Aston Villa fans have had a mixed reaction to rumours that they are set to bid for Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The Birmingham Mail claims that Villa are willing to pay £20 million to sign Butland this summer, as Dean Smith’s side step up their transfer plans.

The bid seems to show ambition, and it has excited many Villa fans.

However, there are others who feel that Butland wouldn’t be the best option for Villa this summer.

Butland has been one of the most consistent stoppers in the Championship, but the fact he is English does put his price at a premium.

Stoke won’t want to let Butland go, but there is a realisation that he deserves to be playing Premier League football.

Villa only bought a goalkeeper in January, but Lovre Kalinic appears to have already slipped down the pecking order for Smith’s side.

If Butland did arrive he could become Villa’s record signing, ahead of Darren Bent, who was bought for £18 million.
