Aston Villa fans react to reported interest in Trent Sainsbury

Aston Villa fans have been reacting on Twitter to the reports emerging from The Sun on Sunday (24/06; page 60) which suggested that Steve Bruce is eyeing a move for Australia star Trent Sainsbury this summer.

Sainsbury is currently part of the Socceroos’ squad at the World Cup and has impressed in both of their group games thus far, with the Aussies losing a controversial game to France before earning a spirited draw against Denmark that keeps their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.

The Sun on Sunday (24/06; page 60) reports that Villa’s inability to get promoted has left them needing to find bargains in the market and Sainsbury is said to be one of the players that Bruce has found who fits into that category.

Sainsbury currently plays in the Chinese Super League, but has been back in Europe for two loan spells in recent times, joining Inter Milan in 2017 and Grasshoppers earlier this year.

News of his potential move to Aston Villa has attracted a somewhat mixed reaction on social media. While no fans seem to be distraught with the reports by any means, there are some who appear underwhelmed.

Villa had a superb defensive partnership between James Chester and John Terry last season, and Sainsbury would have very large boots to fill if he was the man chosen to replace the latter.

There is however, plenty of support for the links with many feeling that he could prove to be as shrewd a signing for the Villans as his international teammate Mile Jedinak.
