Fabio Borini, despite his underwhelming goalscoring record, has had an eventful career for a few top clubs across Europe. After joining Chelsea as a teenager, the Italian moved to Roma before playing for Liverpool and AC Milan over the last decade.

Now soon to be a free-agent, Borini could secure a return to the Premier League. Tutto Mercato Web claim that Aston Villa have made an approach to sign the Italian this summer which is a huge shock.

Dean Smith’s side were made to work hard last season but managed to deliver when it mattered to secure safety in the Premier League. The Villans need to get their transfers right to avoid being in a similar situation next term but is Borini really the way to go?

Yes, he will come in for free. Yes, he has a ton of experience under his belt and yes, he will work his socks off for the team. However, just 16 goals in 111 games in the Premier League over the years is a shocking return for an attacker.

Borini has scored just 11 times in the last three seasons in all competitions. That isn’t a great sign for a club who are looking for a player who would bring in some much-needed goals next season.

Villa managed to score just 41 times in the league last season. Smith has a lot of work to do across his squad but solving his side’s goalscoring woes will be at the top of his priority list.

Links to Borini really is a strange one. Aston Villa fans were hoping for some big news on the transfer front after securing their Premier League status, but their reported interest in the Italian has left some of them disappointed.
