A number of Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to comment on reports from The Sun over the weekend which suggested that Dean Smith’s men are one of the sides interested in signing Ashley Williams from Everton this summer.

The Sun reports that Williams is on his way out of Goodison Park at the end of the season when his contract expires. The 34-year-old has spent the campaign on loan at Stoke City and it would be a huge surprise if the Toffees had any plans to discuss an extension with the Wales international.

But while Everton may be ready to let him go, Williams looks set to have a number of options to pick from. The Sun suggested that Villa are rivalling Huddersfield Town, DC United and New York City for the defender’s signature.

And it appears that plenty of Villa supporters are hoping that they fall short in the race to sign Williams – who earns £70,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – as they are not at all convinced that he would be a good signing.

Smith’s side have been outstanding defensively since the turn of the year. Tyrone Mings, Kortney Hause and Axel Tuanzebe have been excellent loan signings at the back, and Villa now have a fantastic chance of securing promotion out of the Championship.

With that trio currently on the books, it is not difficult to see why some Villa fans view the Williams rumours as underwhelming. He would certainly have a lot to prove if he did make the switch to Villa Park, even if the side fall short in the promotion race this season and remain in the second tier next term.
