Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Alex McCarthy from Southampton this summer.

A number of Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to comment on reports from Sky Sports suggesting that Dean Smith is interested in signing Alex McCarthy this summer, with Southampton ready to let the goalkeeper leave St Mary’s.

The Villans had a turbulent time with their men between the sticks during their promotion-winning campaign. Orjan Nyland started the season in goal, but struggled at times and was replaced by Lovre Kalinic following his arrival in January.

However, Kalinic also failed to stamp his authority on the position, and it was left to Jed Steer to see the Villans home as they produced an incredible run of form to reach and win the play-off final.

Nevertheless, it appears that Smith is hoping to sign a new goalkeeper this summer. And Sky Sports reports that that man could be McCarthy, with Villa one of the Premier League sides interested in the reportedly-available 29-year-old.

McCarthy – who earns £50,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – has enjoyed the best spell of his career on the south coast, but it appears that Ralph Hasenhuttl is now planning to push ahead with Angus Gunn as his first-choice.

Unfortunately for McCarthy, it appears that the majority of the Villa fans on social media are not overly excited about the links with the Saints. Birmingham Live recently suggested that the Villans are also interested in Jack Butland, and plenty have suggested that they would rather see Smith focus his energy on getting the Stoke City man.
