Aston Villa have allegedly scrapped a move for Chelsea’s Gary Cahill.
Aston Villa’s lack of defensive options has been well publicised of late, but Gary Cahill seemingly won’t be the man to solve the issues.
Villa lost John Terry over the summer, and whilst Axel Tuanzebe returned from Manchester United, he and James Chester are the only recognised centre backs at the club.
Tommy Elphick has now returned from a loan move to Hull City, but Villa are still expected to be in the market for another centre back next month.
One name mentioned was Chelsea defender Cahill, who has struggled for first-team football under Maurizio Sarri this season and can leave in 2019.
Having come up through the Villa youth academy, Cahill has been touted for a move back to Villa Park, where he could reunite with ex-Chelsea and England teammate Terry, a current Villa coach.
However, The Telegraph report that Villa have abandoned a possible move for Cahill because of the cost involved, as with a loan fee and wages, taking Cahill to Villa Park would have cost £4million.
After a financial nightmare earlier this year, Villa are unsurprisingly looking elsewhere, and fans have been taking to Twitter to react to the new rumour.
Many fans believe that Villa are making the right decision, as forking out huge money for a short-term solution would have been a standard Steve Bruce move, and was always an absurd notion.
Others think that Cahill would have been worth the money, even questioning the logic of refusing to pay £4million for Cahill but spending more than that on goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic having already signed two goalkeepers in the summer – though Orjan Nyland is now injured.
