Aston Villa headed into Saturday’s clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers in high spirits after their recent upturn in form, but Steve Bruce’s side were second best against the high-flying Wolves, who ran out 2-0 winners.

Second-half goals from Diogo Jota and Leo Bonatini were enough to seal a comfortable win for the hosts, leaving Villa to lick their wounds and come again next week.

The result saw Wolves move to the top of the table while Villa failed to move into the play-off places, although there is a lot of football still to be played and there were setbacks for some of the teams directly above them in the table.

Villa stuck with the same side that had served them so well prior to the international break, but this time it was not to be, with their midfield failing to get a grip on the game and their defence looking far less than their recent imperious best.

One player who came in for criticism, not for the first time this season, was summer signing Glenn Whelan.

The midfielder has won over many of his critics with his recent no-nonsense displays, but the naysayers were out in force after Saturday’s result.

After the game we took to Twitter to see what Villa fans thought of Whelan’s latest showing and you can read a selection of what we found below:
