Aston Villa kept their slim automatic-promotion hopes alive as they won their latest Championship clash.

Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to admit that Glenn Whelan was superb during the Villans’ victory over Leeds on Friday night which keeps Steve Bruce’s side’s slim hopes of securing automatic-promotion out of the Championship alive.
Villa would have undoubtedly expected to beat a Leeds side that have won just two times since the turn of the year, and they would have known how vital it was that they did bag the victory given that they already require plenty of fortune if they are going to catch Fulham and Cardiff City.

Lewis Grabban scored the game’s only goal during the first-half, but Villa rarely looked like they were in danger of not picking up the three points with Leeds stopper Bailey Peacock-Farrell scooping the man of the match award.
While Grabban was the match-winner, it was Whelan who seemed to receive the most praise on social media – and that may be a fact that surprises many Villans supporters given that it has not been an easy season for the veteran.

The £2 million signing – fee reported by the Daily Mail – has struggled for much of the campaign, but was excellent in the middle of the park on Friday night, helping keep Leeds quiet and also proving to be quite useful with his distribution.
And it appears that a number of fans are more than happy to eat some humble pie and admit that Whelan was brilliant in the victory and appears to have turned a corner in recent weeks.
Here is the best of the reaction to Whelan’s display…
