Aston Villa ran out comfortable winners in the second round of the EFL Cup.

Aston Villa appear to have put their shaky start to the new season well and truly behind them, following up their 4-2 Championship victory against Norwich City with a 4-1 EFL Cup win against Wigan Athletic.
Two goals from Scott Hogan and one apiece from Albert Adomah and Birkir Bjarnason were more than enough to seal safe passage into the third round, where the Premier League’s best of the best will enter the competition.

While the goal-scorers took the headlines on the night, Villa’s next generation also impressed, not least midfielder Jake Doyle-Hayes.
The 18-year-old impressed during Villa’s pre-season campaign but he had to make do with a place on the bench for the EFL Cup first round clash with Colchester United before getting a full run out this time round.
The teenager played 78 minutes and did not look out of place, with some Villa fans hailing him as their man of the match for his composed display in the centre of the park.

Villa supporters have had little to cheer about in recent years but that could be about to change, with manager Steve Bruce appearing to have got it right on the field and with a number of exciting youngsters coming through the ranks.
