When Aston Villa kicked off their Championship clash against Ipswich Town this weekend, it seemed substitute Chris Samba would get a breather after starting the club’s previous two matches.
However, an early injury to Mile Jedinak saw Villa boss Steve Bruce call on Samba and the 33-year-old set about impressing for the third straight fixture.
John Terry’s broken metatarsal means Villa need to play other options alongside James Chester until January at the earliest, giving Samba the chance to win over his doubters and Jedinak the opportunity get back into the starting XI after a setback of his own, albeit in a relatively unfamiliar position.
Samba has not been every Villa supporter’s cup of tea since he arrived at the club, but he is now staking his claim as an unlikely fan favourite and he looks set to play plenty more football as the hectic festive fixtures pile up.
He may be approaching the twilight of his career but he still has plenty to offer and Villa’s ongoing promotion push could rest on how well he plays in the weeks ahead.
