It’s always quite exciting when one of your reported targets is omitted from a squad amid speculation about a move – and Aston Villa fans are feeling that excitement now.

Neal Maupay, linked to a £20 million switch to Villa [The Birmingham Mail], was left out of Brentford’s squad for a clash with Wycombe Wanderers earlier today.

Thomas Frank named a number of fringe players, but Pontus Jansson, a £5.5 million signing from Leeds United earlier this month, was among those who played.

Aston Villa seem to be in the market for another striker despite spending £22 million on Wesley from Brazil.

The 22-year-old French marksman, signed by Villa boss Dean Smith for the Griffin Park club in 2017, was sent home from the club’s pre-season tour earlier this summer in order to clear his head.

And here’s how some Villans fans responded to Maupay being left out of Frank’s squad today.

Aston Villa have a number of logs on the fire with regards to transfer business.

The Telegraph reported today that Smith is set to wrap up his ninth and tenth signing shortly, with moves for Trezeguet and Douglas Luiz.

Maupay scored 25 Championship goals last season.
