Aston Villa fans on Twitter were left fuming after Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves won the EFL’s Goal of the Year award and John McGinn missed out.

The EFL confirmed on their official Twitter account on Sunday evening that Neves’ half volley against Derby County in the Championship last season was the best strike of 2018.

There were a number of goals shortlisted, including McGinn’s spectacular volley against Sheffield Wednesday earlier on this season, but it seems it wasn’t good enough to win the award.

As a result, Villa supporters felt that McGinn had been ‘robbed’ and he was the ‘true’ winner of the EFL’s Goal of the Year for 2018.

Nonetheless, McGinn scored against Wednesday once again over the weekend with a wonderful side-footed volley during his side’s 3-1 win.

Since their promotion last season, Wolves have gone from strength to strength under their highly-rated manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Dean Smith, who joined Villa in October, will be hoping to join their Midlands rivals in the Premier League next season as they currently occupy a play-off spot with six games of the season remaining.
