Aston Villa produced a spirited performance on the opening day of the new Premier League season, but suffered a disappointing defeat.

Aston Villa fans have every reason to be optimistic about the season ahead despite marking their return to the Premier League with a 3-1 defeat away at Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of the new campaign.
Dean Smith’s men were 1-0 ahead with less than 20 minutes remaining after John McGinn’s early goal. And while they were taught a harsh lesson by a Spurs side who forced the Villans into mistakes and ultimately punished them ruthlessly, the visitors put up the kind of fight that suggests that they could surprise a lot of people over the next year.
One of the biggest surprises perhaps came from Trezeguet as the winger was one of several players to make his competitive debut for the Championship play-off winners at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The winger was arguably Villa’s most impressive attacking player on Saturday, with the Egypt international linking up nicely with Ahmed Elmohamady and popping up in various positions in the final third.

BBC Sport reports that Trezeguet cost the Villans just £8.75 million, and it appears that there is every chance that that is going to prove to be a bargain fee as he was excellent before being replaced by Jota with just over half an hour to go.
Some supporters felt that the decision to replace Trezeguet with Jota – who has been impressive in pre-season – was a costly error, and lauded the 24-year-old for such an exciting performance on his competitive bow for the club.

Here is how some of the fans reacted to his display…
