Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick has recently been recalled by Dean Smith.

Aston Villa supporters have praised Tommy Elphick’s latest comments, suggesting he should be offered a contract extension.

Elphick is currently playing for his future at Villa, as his current deal expires at the end of the season.

However, the centre-back has offered some wise words in the press recently.

He said to the Guardian: “We can’t be a club that just relies on Jack Grealish. That’s unfair on him and it’s not a way to build a team. As good as Jack is, we need to come up with different solutions when the likes of Jack and Tammy might not be available.

“This manager comes with a structure and a plan that maybe needs a little bit of time to get it where he wants it and, given that time, the club long-term will definitely be able to sustain itself as a top Premier League club again.”

The comments have impressed Villa fans, who have praised Elphick’s professionalism during his time at the club.

Elphick was sent out on loan by Villa last season and at the start of this one, and was only recalled in January.

Steve Bruce often overlooked the former Bournemouth man, but Dean Smith clearly sees him as an important player.

Elphick started Villa’s last match against Reading, alongside Tyrone Mings, and the pair caught the eye, as the claret and blues kept a clean-sheet in a 0-0 draw.

Villa are next in action tomorrow, when they take on Sheffield United.
