Things were looking up for Sam Johnstone at Aston Villa.
After a rocky start to his half-season loan from Manchester United, the 23-year-old ‘keeper went into Tuesday night’s fixture at Huddersfield Town off the back of three successive clean sheets – his first in Villa colours.
But the knives, it seems, were restored to the drawer only temporarily, and were back out after Tommy Smith’s 69th-minute goal for the home side.
Villa had missed a hatful of chances prior to that, with Conor Hourihane lashing over the crossbar and Henri Lansbury rattling it, and Smith’s strike proved decisive in the end.

As such, much of the Villa fans’ frustration appears to have been taken out on Johnstone, who remained stationary as the shot fizzed into his far corner.
