A number of Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to discuss reports emerging from the Daily Mirror which have suggested that the Villans are expected to be amongst the group of sides that make a move for Gary Cahill in January.

Cahill has become a peripheral figure at Chelsea this term. He has barely featured for Maurizio Sarri’s men and the Mirror reports that he has been given the green light to leave Stamford Bridge on loan in January.

The Blues’ stance is intriguing given that he is out of contract at the end of the season so by allowing a loan move, they are going to miss out on getting a fee for the 32-year-old. But the Mirror reports that Chelsea are willing to let their long-serving defender to seek a loan deal as his game-time continues to be restricted.

The Mirror added that Villa were one of the sides to hold an interest in the summer and are expected to make a fresh move in the winter – and that appears to have created a bit of a divide on social media.

There are some who feel that bringing Cahill back to his former club could be a mistake. He is on £130,000-a-week at Chelsea, according to Spotrac, so he is likely to command a very high wage. For some, those funds could be better spent elsewhere.

However, with Villa lacking centre-back options, and Cahill boasting a lot of experience and enjoying a lot of success during his career, some feel that Dean Smith needs to make a deal happen.
