After a 1-1 home draw with Huddersfield Town in midweek, which featured a comical, fluke equaliser for the Terriers, Villa were on the road as they took on Nigel Pearson’s Rams in a clash between two huge clubs.

Given that Derby have scored just one goal this season, it was no surprise that the game ended 0-0, but Villa will feel a little unlucky given that they twice hit the woodwork through Ross McCormack and Gary Gardner.
The big positive for Villa will be that their defence was impressively solid, which is a welcome change given how dreadful Villa were at the back in their relegation campaign last season.

Tommy Elphick is a big part of that, but another new signing impressed alongside him at centre back against Derby, with James Chester playing a key role for Villa.
Signed from West Bromwich Albion earlier this month, Chester impressed for Wales at Euro 2016 this summer, and continued his fine recent form with a superb performance against Derby on Saturday afternoon.
