Aston Villa fans have their right of reply…

Pierluigi Gollini made his Aston Villa exit earlier this month and may never be seen around the club again.

The Italy under-21 international signed on an 18 month loan deal with Atalanta, after falling out of favour under new boss Steve Bruce following Roberto di Matteo’s sacking.

Gollini has this week made some less than complimentary comments regarding his time at Villa Park, insisting that unhappiness behind the scenes made his spell at the club difficult.

He told Italian outlet ANSA: “I returned to Italy with the intention of staying and continuing my career here. The condition I had set my agent for me to stay in Birmingham was to have an Italian goalkeeping coach.

“That was the situation, with Massimo Battara, until the manager Roberto Di Matteo was fired. I played a great deal at Villa, but I wasn’t happy with the training regime.”

Gollini comes across as a bit of a primadonna, for a 21-year-old expecting that he can decide on staff recruitment at the club just months after his arrival, and less than stellar performances.

The goalkeeper’s career got off to a shaky start at Villa Park and it never really recovered. He remains a stopper with excellent potential who Villa could one day go on to regret letting go, but in the here and now, Gollini was not the answer and his attitude reinforces that.
