Some Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to bemoan the fact that Derby have signed Ashley Cole on a free transfer while Dean Smith ponders how to fix the Villans’ issues at left-back.

The Daily Mail reported ahead of his arrival at Pride Park that Cole was all set to pen a contract with the Rams until the end of the season, with the former England international set to earn £15,000-a-week.

Despite the 38-year-old clearly not being a long-term option for Frank Lampard, it does appear to have the potential to be a very shrewd piece of business from the Championship promotion-chasers.

And it is a deal that some Aston Villa fans wish they had seen their club pursue this month.

Unfortunately, Neil Taylor has struggled for form this season. And Smith hardly has the options to replace the Welshman, so it would appear that the Villans could do with signing a new left-back this month.

Villa have conceded 10 goals in their last four games. It would be unfair to suggest that the various left-back options must shoulder the blame for their struggles, but it is certainly proving to be a weak point and some feel that Cole could have been worth considering.
