Centre-back lasted almost an hour for Aston Villa.

Christopher Samba cut an imposing figure as he made his Aston Villa bow for their under-23 side.

Samba is a free agent and has been training with Villa for the past fortnight in a bid to win a contract.

Manager Steve Bruce was interested enough to give the big man a run out last night in the clash against Wolves.

The former Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers centre-back featured for 59 minutes, being withdrawn shortly after Wolves had taken a 1-0 lead.

His replacement, Jordan Lyden, went on to net an equaliser, and Villa went on to record a 2-1 win.

Samba is still building up his match fitness and Villa are likely to be assessing him for the long haul, rather than simply whether he can play a role this season with nothing to play for.

The 32-year-old played most recently with Greek side Panathaniakos before his contract was terminated via mutual consent in January after he had struggled with injuries in the first half of the campaign.

He appeared healthy enough last night and his performance will have given Villa food for thought.
