Aston Villa reportedly missed out on signing Brentford defender Chris Mepham, who has since joined Premier League side Bournemouth.

AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe shakes hands with new signing Chris Mepham at Vitality Stadium on January 22, 2019 in Bournemouth, England.

Aston Villa fans on Twitter have stated that they are not surprised that defender Chris Mepham opted to join Premier League side Bournemouth.

The Cherries confirmed on their official Twitter account that Brentford centre-back Mepham has joined them from the Championship outfit.

But, according to The Sun (23 January, page 51), Aston Villa were also keen on his services as they offered him a better deal than Bournemouth and tried to lure him to the Midlands.

It is quite clear that Mepham opted against staying in the second-tier of English football as he will be now looking to prove his worth in one of the best league’s in the world.

Villa fans on Twitter understood Mepham’s decision, but one supporter did admit that he would have loved the Wales international at his club.

All in all, the Villa Park faithful were in agreement that their club needs new defensive additions and Mepham made the right choice for his career.

Here is a selection of Villa supporters on Twitter reacting to Mepham’s confirmed deal to Bournemouth:

Over the course of the season, the defensive powerhouse has played 22 league games for the Bees, some of which came under Villa boss Dean Smith.

He helped his side secure four clean sheets in the process as he will now join a Bournemouth team that are three points off seventh-placed Watford in the Premier League table.
