A report has suggested that Aston Villa are plotting an £8 million January bid for Sheffield Wednesday’s Barry Bannan.

It appears that many Aston Villa fans are not convinced by Dean Smith’s thinking amid reports from the Daily Mirror that the Villans are plotting an £8 million bid for Barry Bannan in January.

Bannan is arguably in the top bracket when it comes to Championship midfielders. The Scotland international has been excellent since signing for Sheffield Wednesday, and has been superb in the deep-lying role he has occupied this term.

The Mirror reports that Smith wants to make the 28-year-old his first signing following his appointment at Villa Park, and is willing to pay £8 million to make a deal happen. The report adds that he felt that Bannan should have never been allowed to leave the Villans five years ago.

The news that Villa could be considering the big-money move for their former academy prospect has seemingly left a number of supporters feeling slightly perplexed.

Although Bannan’s quality can hardly be questioned, some fans cannot see how the seven-figure fee would represent good value for money when he is unlikely to improve much further and will only strengthen an area where Villa already look well-stocked.

There is some support for a potential move for Bannan – and there would surely be more if the reported fee involved in a potential bid was not so high – but many fans would rather see Smith focus on signing a defender, or even Wednesday teammate Adam Reach, who is in stunning form right now.
