Aston Villa’s seemingly endless plight continued on Wednesday night as they suffered an embarrassing 3-1 defeat at League Two side Luton Town in the first round of the EFL Cup.
Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo made seven changes to the side that lost 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday in Sunday’s Championship opener, and his new-look team initially appeared to be on their way to a straightforward victory after Jordan Ayew took advantage of some questionable defending following a Ross McCormack corner to slot home the 13th-minute opener.
Luton were level by the 35th-minute, however, when former Crystal Palace youngster Jake Gray finished off a well-worked team move to begin the visitors’ dramatic collapse.
Fellow midfielder Cameron McGeehan then gave the Hatters a shock lead eight minutes after the break with a close-range finish, before Jores Okore compounded a miserable night for Villa when he sliced an attempted clearance into his own net in the 66th-minute.
Di Matteo’s men did hit the woodwork three times over the course of the match, but the defeat could have been even worse but for some last-ditch defending.
With fans understandably frustrated and angry about result, few players escaped criticism on the night, but nobody seemingly received quite as much backlash as Alan Hutton.
The Scottish right-back only began the game on the bench after starting Sunday’s loss at Wednesday, but his display following his half-time introduction for the injured Nathan Baker was so uninspiring and mistaken-ridden that supporters on Twitter were calling on the club to cancel his contract.
