Aston Villa signed Tom Carroll during the January transfer window, but he has returned to Swansea City.
Several Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to comment on the news that the club confirmed on their official website that Tom Carroll has returned to parent club Swansea after being ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury.
Carroll’s time with the Villans never really got going. He arrived on loan on transfer deadline day in January after Villa failed to sign Swans teammate Leroy Fer (via Sky Sports). And it was apparent that Villa had some high hopes for the former Spurs youngster as the deal also included the option to buy in the summer (via Birmingham Live).
Unfortunately, Carroll lost out with Dean Smith’s midfield in fine form since the turn of the year and with the squad only being able to include five loanees within each matchday squad.
The 26-year-old managed to make just two substitute appearances for Villa, with the most recent coming in the 4-0 win at home to Derby County at the start of March.
Villa have now confirmed on their official website that Carroll has undergone hip surgery and will miss the rest of the season so has returned to his parent club – surely ruling out any remaining chance of Villa looking into a permanent deal in the summer.
Plenty of Villa fans have wished Carroll well. But they have noted how disappointing a deal it has proven to be for the promotion chasers, with many joking about how much of a contribution he has managed to make during his time with the club.
