The caretaker manager took charge of the final seven matches of Villa’s horror season.
Aston Villa’s ongoing revolution continued on Tuesday with the news that former caretaker manager Eric Black has left the club along with goalkeeping coach Tony Parks.
Black was named as first-team coach at Villa Park in late January under Remi Garde and was later promoted to head coach on an interim basis after the French boss was sacked in March.
Under the Scot’s rule, Villa earned just a single point from their final seven league matches of the season, a goalless draw against soon-to-be-relegated Newcastle United.
Though Villa were already long doomed by the time he took up the reins, Black was a particular target of criticism and frustration from supporters for several reasons, chief amongst them being his often bizarre team selections.
The hapless bottom club scored just five times and conceded 18 in Black’s seven-match spell, a run which included shipping four goals on three separate occasions.
Despite Black’s experience as a coach, newly-appointed manager Roberto Di Matteo has found no room for the 52-year-old in his backroom staff and the former Aberdeen striker has now departed Villa Park.
With Villa fans looking ahead with cautious optimism to the upcoming season, there was not too much sentiment on display from supporters on Twitter as they reacted to Black’s exit.
