Steve Bruce’s Villa are in desperate need of a centre-back.
Carlos Cuellar has confirmed on Twitter that he has left Israeli side Beitar Jerusalem after just two and a half months with the club – and some Aston Villa fans are desperate to see the Spaniard return to Villa Park.
Cuellar, 37, joined Beitar in July but managed only two appearances in Europa League qualifying before opting to terminate his contract. He confirmed on Twitter that he is looking for a new club, rather than hanging up his boots.
The former Osasuna defender joined Villa in August 2008 for a fee worth £7.8million (The Daily Mail), after starring north of the border for Rangers in their Europa League campaign – where he made 55 appearances in one season.
Of his 10 professional clubs, Cuellar remained at Villa the longest and indeed played the most times for the Midlands club, puling on the claret and blue shirt 121 times in four years.
In 2012, his contract expired at Villa and he was allowed to join Sunderland on a free transfer, but he remained a favourite among Villa fans for his efforts at B6 during his four-year spell.
Villa desperately need a centre-back at the moment, after allowing Tommy Elphick to join Aston Villa on loan. The club failed to sign Harold Moukoudi, while John Terry and Chris Samba have also left.
Axel Tuanzebe played alongside James Chester at centre-back last time out, and some Villa fans want Bruce to bring in some cover by luring Cuellar back to the Midlands despite being 37 years of age.
