Steve Bruce has confirmed that Aston Villa will commence contract talks with in-form defender Alan Hutton after the Championship play-off final – and fans are desperate to see him sign.

The 33-year-old’s contract at Villa Park is set to expire at the end of the season, despite being a regular in Bruce’s side as the Villans close in on promotion to the Premier League.

They face Fulham in the play-off final on Saturday afternoon at Wembley, and former Tottenham and Rangers star Hutton is expected to start in his makeshift role of left-back against Slavisa Jokanovic’s side.

Bruce was quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying: “I can confirm we will be talking to him next week, whichever division we are in. He deserves it,” Bruce said. “He is everything that I enjoy in a player. At nearly 34 years old he is quite magnificent in terms of his fitness.”

Hutton has made 32 appearances in all competitions for Villa this season, including both Championship play-off semi-finals in which he helped Villa keep two clean sheets against Tony Pulis’ side.

The Daily Star claim Hutton, who has 50 caps for Scotland, is believed to be earning £30,000 a week at Villa Park but Bruce has confirmed that talks will begin whether Villa remain in the Championship or gain promotion.

Villa fans reacted with delight, urging the club to keep Hutton.
