Aston Villa have kept four clean sheets in their last five matches.

Steve Bruce has told Aston Villa’s official website that Sam Johnstone has turned his time at Villa Park around.

Johnstone arrived at Villa on loan from Manchester United in the January transfer window, and made a difficult start to his career.

The young goalkeeper made a series of errors in the initial stages of his time at Villa, and suffered a lot of criticism from supporters.

However, the claret and blues have been much improved defensively of late – and Bruce says that Johnstone is gaining confidence by the game.

“Our goalkeeper, Sam Johnstone, is growing in confidence with every game,” Bruce said.

“That’s now four clean sheets in five games. That gives you the platform. There’s a resilience there with the lads at the back.

“We are seeing a spirt throughout the squad – they are showing it really means something.

“I think Sam is an exceptionally good young goalkeeper. He works tirelessly – he works and works and works. I was pleased for him.”

Villa fans have also done a u-turn over Johnstone recently, with many suggesting they would now like to see him sign on a permanent deal.

Villa’s improved defensive record has helped them to climb up the Championship table recently.

Bruce’s men won 2-0 against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, in a hugely impressive result.

Johnstone is set to start for Villa in their next match, which comes against Wigan Athletic.
